The fasteners are hidden under the seam rather than driven through the face of the panel. Exposed-fastener roofs rely on hundreds of rubber washers that dry out and start leaking somewhere around year twelve. Standing seam has none of that on the surface.
Wind is the honest reason to consider it here. There are no individual shingles for a gust to lift off a rake edge, and snow and rain shed instead of sitting. It also weighs less than architectural shingle, which matters on an older structure.
